Cognitive and Occupational Rehabilitation Therapy
Cognitive & Occupational Rehabilitation Therapy is recommended for individuals who are experiencing some form of cognitive impairment and may also be suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or neurocognitive disorders. This type of therapy aims to improve cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and concentration, increase information processing as well as motor skills for use in everyday life, most importantly restoring the ability to improve daily functioning, ie., work, school, and relationships.
How Does Cognitive & Occupational Rehabilitation Therapy Work?
When it comes to strengthening cognitive capabilities, strengthening the neuronal connections is feasible and these skills are obtainable and can even be improved. This treatment begins by helping individuals recognize their cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Based on the treatment plan provided by the neuropsychological evaluator, the occupational & cognitive rehab therapist will work closely with the client/patient to achieve the desired outcome. Working with the clinician through weekly online video sessions, each individualized treatment plan will touch on Education, Process Training, Strategy Training, and Functional Activities Training.
Education Individuals will gain insight on how the brain works, which areas might have been damaged, and how this translates into everyday life functions.
Process Training With time and practice, working with the clinician, individuals will target specific cognitive skills to stimulate new connections in the brain.
Strategy Training Individuals will learn to create or modify routines, use assistive apps and other digital tools, create functional lists or recording methods, and make other small changes to accommodate their daily lives.
Functional Activities Training Individuals will learn how to apply what is learned in session towards real life applications for their cognitive functions.
